Spas

– Ray Spa is a small local spa in the street which is nice.

Milanos Spa (see image) is a 10 minute ride away.

~Milano’s Spa is a light spacious and classic Ubud Spa set in beautiful gardens with lotus ponds. Jelila: “I’ve been coming here for 25 years! I recommend the Hair Cream Bath, a hair wash and treatment, which comes with a wonderful shoulder and hand massage. you can add a Mani Pedi and foot massage, they’ll do all those at the same time and it’s lovely!  Mandi Lulur, a massage followed by a body scrub with aromatic spices like cinnamon and clove, is another treatment I highly recommend here. It’s followed by a relaxing flower bath in a giant round bath set in a picturesque large room with french windows onto the rice field, with plenty of very hot water (sometimes having enough hot water is a snag in Bali,  but not here!) and lovely red petals. Selfie moment of your legs in the water and the window view – which can include peeping monkeys!”

After Milano’s you can pop into Ibu Susu, a cool restaurant – bar with exquisite cocktails and lovely Asian fusion food, fine dining, and the fab mural of a Balinese woman on the wall (Selfie moment!) it is only a few more steps, heading towards the monkey forest from Milano’s, on the same side. Prices – medium to high, but worth it. Off street parking in the back, down the right side.

Slightly further towards the monkey forest and left side you will find the large and gracious Tropical restaurant which is a high balé with red settees and attractive bamboo hanging lights, that opens on to rice fields and has a large fish pool with entertainingly huge coi carp. I recommend the spare ribs here – they are excellent. Go mad, and order the biggest portion, and take half back to your room as a ‘bungkus’ to eat later (Tip: did you know that you can ask for ‘a bungkus’ or to have your food wrapped to take home, at pretty much any food place in Bali?) The berry crumble dessert is delicious too – order just one to share – it’s huge, and it comes with ice cream. Reasonably priced and excellent food.  Children love playing with the fish. Nice cocktails and a long bar. Sometimes you’ll spot monkeys in the rice field at the back, here.

Visit the Monkey Forest and breathe in the peaceful cool atmosphere created by the many tall leafy trees. you’ll see many monkeys (Selfie moment!) – watch out for your earrings, spectacles bag, camera and phone, because the monkeys may try to take them. Don’t let this deter you though – walk into the monkey forest centre and right, to where there is the most marvelous dragon bridge (Selfie moment!), long, curved, and carved to look like a local ‘naga’ dragon, it’s great to take photographs here, and enjoy the atmosphere and nature. There’s also a fenced off fish pond which is nice, and a beautiful river. Avoid carrying rustling plastic bags here, because the monkeys will think you have food inside – you want to avoid them thinking that, because otherwise they’ll come and get interested in it!  But don’t worry – if the monkeys do take something the locals will come and bribe it back from them with a banana – you just have to pay for the banana – it’s all part of the show!
